UN Condemns Russia's Invasion of Ukraine, Demands Withdrawal

Overwhelming Majority of Member States Adopt Resolution Denouncing Aggression

Exclusive Interview with Rwandan Ambassador on Long-Term Solution to Ukraine Crisis

April 22, 2022 - The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly adopted a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and demanding an immediate withdrawal of its forces.

The resolution, which was adopted by a vote of 141 to 5 with 35 abstentions, calls on Russia to cease all military operations in Ukraine and withdraw its troops within three days.

In an exclusive interview with The New Times, the Rwandan Ambassador to the United Nations, Alice Kagina, said that the resolution was a "strong condemnation" of Russia's actions and a call for "de-escalation and diplomacy."

Kagina said that the Rwandan government believes that the long-term solution to the Ukraine crisis is a negotiated settlement that respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries.

"The war in Ukraine has had a devastating impact on the Ukrainian people and the global economy," Kagina said. "We urge all parties to come together and find a peaceful solution to this conflict."

The European Court of Justice has issued a last-minute ruling halting the deportation of migrants to Rwanda, a move that has been welcomed by human rights groups.

The ruling comes just days before the first deportation flight was due to take off from the UK.

Human rights groups have long criticized the UK's plans to send migrants to Rwanda, arguing that it violates international law and puts asylum seekers at risk.

The European Court of Justice agreed with these concerns, ruling that there was a "real risk of irreversible harm" to asylum seekers if they were sent to Rwanda.

The UK government has said that it is "disappointed" by the ruling and is considering its next steps.
