Boeing 818: The Aircraft That Won Competitions but Lost Out in the End

Overview

The Boeing 818 was a fighter aircraft proposed by Boeing in the early 1960s. It competed in several competitions but ultimately lost out to other designs.

Selection Process and Engine Concerns

The Boeing 818 was recommended by the selection board in January 1962, except for its engine, which was deemed unacceptable. Boeing initially defended its engine choice but later switched to a crew escape capsule instead.

Competition and Loss

The Boeing 818 competed against the F-111 in the WS-324 competition but was not selected. Despite winning four out of five competitions, the 818 ultimately lost out due to various factors, including the engine issue and the decision to go with the F-111 as a joint Air Force and Navy aircraft.
