A deputy or assistant chief is typically the second highest position in the chain-of-command within a police department. In some departments, it is the highest rank below the chief of police.
Role and Responsibilities
Deputy chiefs typically work closely with the chief of police to develop and implement policies and procedures. They may also oversee specific divisions or units within the department, such as patrol, investigations, or administration.
In many cases, deputy chiefs are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department in the absence of the chief. They may also be called upon to represent the department to the public or to other agencies.
